What is a Postpartum Doula? The Unsung Hero of Your ‘After-Party’ into Parenthood!

Postpartum doulas are here for the “after-party” of parenthood! You’ve just welcomed your little one, and now comes the whirlwind of early changes, sleepless nights, and constant adjustments. That’s where a postpartum doula steps in—offering support, guidance, and a calm presence to help you navigate this transformative time. Think of us as the bridge between birth and your new life as a family, saving you time, energy, and money by prioritizing your recovery and well-being. Focus on those precious moments with your baby while we take care of the rest!

Why Look for a Postpartum Doula?

Every family and every postpartum experience is different, so postpartum doulas offer a unique blend of support tailored to each family’s specific needs. The early postpartum period can feel overwhelming whether you're a first-time parent or welcoming a new sibling. A doula provides the extra layer of emotional, physical, and educational support that helps parents thrive—not just survive—during this delicate phase.

Not every doula is certified, and there’s no requirement to be—but I’m grateful for my certification with DONA International because it gave me a launch pad 🚀 into this world of birth work. Through my training, I’ve gained evidence-based knowledge and the tools to provide comprehensive care while remaining flexible to your unique family needs. My approach blends research with compassion, offering tailored support in everything from newborn care and breastfeeding to the invaluable aspect of postpartum nutrition.

What Does a Postpartum Doula Do?

From emotional support to practical assistance, postpartum doulas are your go-to resource in the early days after childbirth. We specialize in providing:

  • Emotional Support: Helping you process postpartum life's emotional ups and downs.

  • Infant Care Education: Guiding you through feeding, diapering, and baby soothing techniques.

  • Household Help: Light tidying, laundry, and keeping things running smoothly.

  • Lactation Support: Assisting with breastfeeding or bottle-feeding guidance.

  • Nutritional Support: Creating nourishing meals to aid your recovery (especially when your doula’s forte is food like mine!).

Temporary Role, Lasting Impact

In the world of birth work, I understand that the role of a postpartum doula is often temporary, but its impact is profoundly supportive and tailored to each unique family. The birthing space can feel overwhelming with many professionals involved, each contributing essential care and expertise. As a doula, I value and respect the diverse needs and definitions of family that come with this journey.

Holistic and Customized Care

My approach is rooted in evidence-based science, but I remain open and flexible to the varying ways families need support. Every family is different, and my role is to meet you where you are—and help you navigate this chapter in a way that honors your specific needs. Whether it’s providing nutritional guidance, infant care, or emotional support, I am here to support your healing and bonding in a fully customized way.

How Do You Become a Postpartum Doula?

To become a certified postpartum doula with DONA International, there’s a structured path that ensures high standards of care. Here’s a peek into the process:

  1. Attend a DONA-Approved Workshop: A comprehensive training program over 4-6 weeks or an intensive weekend course.

  2. Reading Requirements: Dive into a reading list covering everything from infant feeding to communication, cultural competency, and emotional well-being.

  3. CPR Certification: Be certified in adult and infant CPR—safety first!

  4. Hands-on Experience: Provide at least 15 hours of support to three postpartum clients, gathering evaluations to show your skills.

  5. Recommendations: Secure two letters of recommendation from professionals.

  6. Breastfeeding Education: Complete at least 3 hours of breastfeeding education.

  7. Reflective Essay: Write an essay on the role and responsibilities of a postpartum doula.

  8. Sign the Code of Ethics: Uphold DONA’s standards by committing to their Code of Ethics and Standards of Practice.
